Confirmation has been received that the Gibbstown–Wilkinstown section of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway is set to receive a major surface upgrade this month, marking another important step in improving accessibility and user experience along the route.
The 4km stretch between Gibbstown and Wilkinstown will be upgraded to a high-quality bituminous (tarmacadam) surface, significantly improving conditions for cyclists, walkers, wheelchair users, buggies and other wheeled users.
Temporary Closure During Works
To allow these works to be completed safely and efficiently, this section of the greenway will be fully closed for approximately 2–3 weeks. Surface preparation is expected to begin shortly, with tarmacadam works scheduled to commence from Monday 16th, weather permitting.
While temporary closures are always inconvenient, these works are unavoidable and will deliver long-term benefits for greenway users.
A Continuous Surfaced Route Taking Shape
Once completed, users will enjoy a fully surfaced greenway from Navan through Wilkinstown and on to Nobber, creating a smoother and more accessible experience across this growing section of the national greenway network.
The remaining 10km section from Nobber to Kingscourt is currently planned for completion in 2027, which will ultimately deliver a continuous high-quality route linking Meath and Cavan.
Accessibility and Usage at the Core
The Navan–Wilkinstown section has already proven hugely popular with a wide variety of users. This upgrade will further enhance safety, comfort and year-round usability, particularly during wet weather when unsealed surfaces can deteriorate.a
New wayfinding and information maps are also planned for installation at display panels along the route, helping visitors better navigate and enjoy the greenway.
Continued Investment in Greenways
These works form part of ongoing improvement projects across the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, reflecting sustained investment by local authorities and transport bodies in active travel, outdoor recreation and sustainable tourism.
Greenways Ireland will continue to share updates as works progress and looks forward to reopening this section in the coming weeks — smoother, safer and more accessible than ever.
