The Limerick Greenway has become the first greenway in Ireland to introduce a full end-to-end virtual reality (VR) tour of its route.

The initiative allows users to explore the entire greenway digitally, offering an immersive preview experience of the 40km route between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale. The VR tour enables viewers to navigate key sections of the greenway remotely, including its railway tunnels, viaducts and rural landscapes.

A Digital Access Initiative

The project aims to provide broader access to the greenway experience, particularly for:

  • Potential visitors planning a trip
  • Schools and tourism partners
  • People with mobility limitations who may not be able to travel the full route

By allowing users to experience the greenway virtually, the initiative may also support tourism marketing efforts and trip planning.

Part of a Wider Digital Trend

Virtual tours are increasingly being adopted across tourism and heritage sites in Ireland, and this development reflects a broader move towards digital engagement within the outdoor recreation sector.

While the physical greenway remains the primary attraction, the VR offering provides an additional layer of accessibility and promotion. It may also serve as a model for other greenway projects considering digital enhancements.
