About Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway
Opened in recent years, the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway offers approximately 30km of peaceful, car-free pathway, following the line of the former railway from Navan in County Meath to Kingscourt in County Cavan. The route gently threads its way through the rural heartlands of the Boyne Valley and into the lakelands landscape, delivering a relaxed and immersive journey through open farmland, quiet cuttings, and a series of welcoming villages including Wilkinstown, Nobber, and Kilmainhamwood. With its easy gradients, wide corridor, and steadily improving surface, the greenway provides a calm and accessible experience for walkers, cyclists, and families alike — connecting historic communities while showcasing the understated beauty of Ireland’s inland countryside.
Future Developments of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway
The Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway is set to enter an important new phase of enhancement in early 2026, with significant tarmac upgrades planned along key sections of the route. These works will provide a smoother, more consistent surface throughout, greatly improving comfort for leisure cyclists, families, and walkers while further elevating the overall quality of the greenway experience.
Looking ahead, further developments are expected to strengthen the Kingscourt end of the route. Plans include a connection into Dún na Rí Forest Park, creating a seamless link between the greenway and the forest’s established woodland trail network. This integration will allow users to extend their journey beyond the rail corridor and into one of County Cavan’s most scenic natural amenities.
In addition, Eugene Cassidy has indicated that planning for a proposed Whitewood Lake boardwalk is expected to be submitted in 2026. If delivered, this feature would introduce a distinctive lakeside element to the greenway, offering a new waterside experience and adding further visual interest along the route.
A new, upgraded trailhead facility in Kingscourt is also anticipated as part of the next phase of development. Enhanced parking, visitor information, and orientation signage will strengthen Kingscourt’s role as a primary gateway to the greenway.
Together, these planned improvements reflect continued investment in the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, ensuring it evolves into an even more connected, accessible, and attractive destination in the years ahead.
